I neutrini non sono più veloci della luce. Le misure rilevate nel settembre scorso sarebbero dovute ad un’anomalia nel funzionamento degli apparati utilizzati per misurare la velocità dei neutrini. A scoprire l’anomalia negli strumenti di misura è stato lo stesso gruppo di ricerca italiano dell’esperimento Cngs (Cern Neutrino to Gran Sasso), nel quale un fascio di neutrini viene ’sparato’ dal Cern di Ginevra ai Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso dell’Istituto Nazionale di Fisica nucleare (Infn). I ricercatori sono gli stessi che lavorano al rivelatore Opera e che esattamente cinque mesi fa, il 23 settembre 2011, avevano notato che i neutrini viaggiavano a velocita’ superiore alla luce  ( notizia comunque divulgata con cautela dal TEAM )

A scoprire l’anomalia sono stati quindi gli stessi ricercatori che lavorano al rivelatore Opera e che esattamente cinque mesi fa, il 23 settembre 2011, avevano notato una discrepanza di 60 nanosecondi tra la velocità dei neutrini e quella della luce, a vantaggio dei primi. Proprio dalla collaborazione di Opera è atteso un aggiornamento per domani, ma questa sera ad anticipare il dato è stata la rivista internazionale Science, che parla di un “errore” dovuto ad una “cattiva connessione” fra un cavo a fibre ottiche che collega al computer il ricevitore Gps utilizzato per misurare il tempo di percorrenza di neutrini.
Il fisico responsabile dell’esperimento Antonio Ereditato con molta prudenza chiede di controllare la connessione e se effettivamente il ritardo e’ dovuto al sistema di rivelazione
oppure effettivamente e’ un fenomeno fisico.

La teoria della relatività di Albert Einstein è salva: i neutrini non sono più veloci della luce, a differenza di quanto annunciato a settembre del 2011 dal team dell’esperimento Opera dell’acceleratore di particelle Lhc del Cern di Ginevra. Le misure rilevate sarebbero dovute ad un’anomalia nel funzionamento degli apparati utilizzati.
La questione  fondamentale per la fisica  ha implicazioni fondamentali nello studio dell’universo
e sicuramente ne sentiremo parlare a lungo nei prossimi anni.
